Introduction to Creative Strings Academy

Posted by Christian Howes on Aug 20, 2018 2:53:33 PM

For many classical string players, sticking with classical music is enough. In fact, it’s plenty. After all, the repertoire is incredible, and the technique required to play it is both challenging to learn and rewarding to use. But for others, it is simply not enough, or perhaps not a perfect fit.

The Total Violinist is a seeker, never satisfied with the status quo because they are an explorer at heart. Most of these artists have taken unique paths in their careers, sometimes smooth, sometimes anything but smooth. Because they are artists, they continually create and share their creations with others.

Christian Howes is such an artist. His story is a story of struggle and triumph, of seeking authenticity and of becoming the best version of himself. His passion is to help others discover their own musical passions and become the best musicians they can be.

Learning Jazz Violin? A Drummer Is a Jazz Violinist's Best Friend

Posted by Guest Blogger on Aug 24, 2012 4:11:00 PM

Today's guest blog is from teacher and violinist Christian Howes. Mr. Howes shares some great advice for musicians: make friends with someone who, through their background or training or experience, has something to teach you. Often we gravitate toward folks who play like us, but Mr. Howes suggests that seeking out different musical traditions challenges us and makes us less insular musicians. It's certainly an inspiring blog, but at the very least don't miss the video of the jam session below!

Think about your best friends.

Are You a Creative String Player?

Posted by Guest Blogger on Aug 6, 2012 4:55:00 PM

We're very pleased at SHAR to share our first guest blog from the talented violinist and educator Christian Howes. Although a classically-trained musician, Mr. Howes made a name for himself in the New York jazz scene in the '90s, playing with renowned musicians such as trumpeter Randy Brecker, pianist D.D. Jackson, Bill Evans’ Soulgrass, crossover pioneers Spyro Gyra and the legendary guitarist-inventor Les Paul. In addition, Mr. Howes is a former associate professor at the Berklee College of Music and was the founder of the Creative Strings Workshop in 2003. It's fair to say that all these passions – classical music, jazz and rock, and teaching – show up in Mr. Howes's fascinating blog article. The article asks an essential and important question for music today: Is it possible to bridge the cultures of rock and jazz with the culture of classical music education? And if so, how can classical musicians harness the creative energies of rock and jazz?

We tend to ascribe values to ourselves which don't necessarily coincide with how we spend our time. For example, even if I really wanted to, I couldn't call myself "athletic" if I only exercised once every other week. It wouldn't matter how much I think, deep down inside, that I'm athletic.
